Aprenda a usar o verbo 'to be' no passado (frases afirmativas, negativas e interrogativas)

Esta lição aborda a utilização do verbo To Be no passado (Past Simple).

1. O Verbo To Be no Passado (Afirmativa)

O verbo To Be é classificado como um verbo irregular (não termina em 'ed' no passado). A forma do verbo To Be no passado varia conforme as pessoas gramaticais:

Was: Utilizado para a 1ª e 3ª pessoa do singular (I, He, She, It).

Were: Utilizado para a 2ª pessoa do singular/plural e as demais formas do plural (You, We, They).

Exemplos Afirmativos:

The weather was beautiful yesterday.

→ O tempo estava bonito ontem.

We were at home on Saturday night.

→ Nós estávamos em casa no sábado à noite.

She was very happy with the surprise.

→ Ela estava muito feliz com a surpresa.

The students were quiet during the exam.

→ Os alunos estavam quietos durante o exame.

2. Estrutura Negativa e Interrogativa

Uma distinção fundamental no estudo do Past Simple é que, ao contrário de outros verbos, o verbo To Be não requer o uso do auxiliar DID para construir frases negativas ou interrogativas.

Enquanto verbos regulares (como work) ou irregulares (como go) dependem do auxiliar Did — que faz o verbo principal retornar à sua forma base —, o verbo To Be é autossuficiente: ele apenas altera sua posição ou recebe a partícula de negação.

Negativa (Sujeito + was/were + not):

The park was not (wasn't) crowded on Friday.

→ O parque não estava lotado na sexta-feira.

I was not (wasn't) happy with the result.

→ Eu não estava feliz com o resultado.

The weather was not (wasn't) hot yesterday.

→ O tempo não estava quente ontem.

They were not (weren't) at home in the morning.

→ Eles não estavam em casa de manhã.

Interrogativa (Was/Were + Sujeito?):

Was the event quiet?

→ O evento estava tranquilo?

Were they at home yesterday?

→ Eles estavam em casa ontem?

Was the mall crowded last weekend?

→ O shopping estava lotado no último fim de semana?

Were you happy in your old job?

→ Você era feliz no seu antigo emprego?

Last week, my business trip to São Paulo was very difficult. The weather was terrible, so the airport was extremely crowded and stressful. I was very tired because the flight was long and the seats were not comfortable.

The hotel was quiet, but I was not there for long. My colleagues were in New York, so I was alone to prepare the important presentation. However, the documents were not in my bag and I was desperate.

My manager was not happy with the delay, so I stayed awake all night to rewrite the files. Fortunately, the new documents were ready on the computer on Friday morning. The presentation was a great success and the mission was finally complete.
